FOSS4G (Events)

The internationally acclaimed “Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial” conference is our annual global conference held in a different city each year since 2004. It regularly attracts over 1,000 practitioners and advocates for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial.

About FOSS4G

With a robust schedule of keynote speakers, workshops, paper sessions and talks, FOSS4G offers a great opportunity for newcomers and regular visitors alike. This annual gathering of the community includes:

  • A massive selection of presentations from diverse presenters
  • Hands-on workshops teaching or demonstrating capabilities or tools
  • Opportunities for networking, connecting or just having fun
  • Community days, including code sprints, side adventures or mapathions

FOSS4G Hiroshima 2026, Japan

We are excited to welcome everyone to FOSS4G 2026 in Hiroshima, Japan, from 30 August–5 September 2026

Geospatial technology empowers communities to address real-world challenges such as disaster response, urban planning, and environmental resilience.

At FOSS4G Hiroshima 2026, we will further highlight the humanitarian applications of open-source geospatial technologies — from supporting refugees to preserving cultural memory.

As a “City of Peace and Reconstruction”, Hiroshima is an ideal place to explore how technology can foster empathy, inclusion, and international collaboration.

And of course, we invite you to enjoy Hiroshima’s unique culture and delicious cuisine to the fullest!

FOSS4G Selection Process and Conference Committee

The FOSS4G selection process is managed by our conference committee. The event alternates between three regions:

  • North America
  • Europe
  • Worldwide
