My Mission
To promote free and open source geospatial solutions in science and teaching.Biography
Prof. Evelyn Uuemaa holds a BSc (2003) in Physical Geography, an MSc (2004) in Geoinformatics and Cartography and a PhD (2007) in Landscape Ecology from the University of Tartu, Estonia. She did her postdoc (2015 – 2017) at the National Atmospheric and Water Research Institute (NIWA) in New Zealand. Since 2023, she has been a Professor in Geoinformatics and the Head of the Chair of Geoinformatics and Cartography at the University of Tartu. She is currently also the council member of the Association of Geographic Information Laboratories in Europe (AGILE) and board member of the Estonian Geoinformatics Society.
Her research has always been at the interface of environmental sciences and geoinformatics. Since 2017, she has been leading the Landscape Geoinformatics Lab at the University of Tartu. The team is dedicated to using open-source geospatial software for spatial modelling of environmental variables (e.g., carbon storage, water quality) with remote sensing data. She is also teaching several core courses in geoinformatics and is dedicated to teaching students to understand spatial analysis methods and not become reliant on a particular tool. However, when choosing tools, open-source software gives them the greatest power. Evelyn is also keen on geospatial visualisation, especially in showcasing how open-source tools enable as cool visualisations as proprietary software (e.g., Illustrator). She has fully completed three #30DayMapChallenges. She believes that visualisation is a powerful communication tool. Some of her work on geospatial visualisation with open-source geospatial software can be seen here.
Evelyn was in the Local Organising Team of FOSS4G Europe 2024 and a Co-chair of the Academic Track at FOSS4G Europe 2024
