Biography

GIS practitioner, educator and open source community member

I am a GIS professional with a career strongly linked to free and open source geospatial software, both in professional environments and through long-term community involvement. I currently work at iCarto (https://icarto.es), where I contribute to the design and development of open source GIS solutions for real-world projects, mainly focused on public administrations and organizations with complex territorial needs.

Throughout my professional path, I have worked always with open source technologies, combining spatial analysis, process automation and web mapping application development. My approach to GIS emphasizes using technology as a means rather than an end, always prioritizing context, real needs and long-term sustainability of solutions.

I have been an active member of the OSGeo Spanish Local Chapter since 2010, participating in initiatives related to dissemination, training and community building around open source GIS. Within this context, I am one of the creators and driving forces behind the GeoCamp initiative (https://geocamp.es), a reference event for the open source geospatial community in Spain. GeoCamp was conceived as an open, collaborative space for knowledge sharing, networking and strengthening the free GIS ecosystem.

Education and outreach are central pillars of my activity. I am the author of the children’s book Fina e os mapas (https://finaeosmapas.ghandalf.org/), a project aimed at explaining collaborative cartography and the principles behind open initiatives such as OpenStreetMap (https://www.openstreetmap.org) to younger audiences. Through storytelling and illustration, the book introduces concepts such as collective map-making, participation and shared geographic knowledge, fostering early geospatial literacy and an understanding of open data and community-driven mapping.

In parallel, I am actively involved in higher education and professional training, designing learning materials and tutoring students in GIS and geospatial programming. I currently work as a tutor in the Master’s Degree in Geographic Information Systems (https://mastersig.fundacioudg.org), supporting students in practical projects and helping them develop critical thinking, autonomy and a solid understanding of open source GIS tools and workflows.
