My Mission

Spread the spirit of FOSSGIS & Community in Hydrography

Biography

Ulrike Assmann is an active member of FOSSGIS e.V (since 2017) and a Member of the programme committee since 2021.

She is currently Senior Hydrographic Cartographer in the Hydrographic Office of Germany (BSH).

Ulrike strives to foster greater understanding and acceptance of FOSS in public administration and to establish the use of open source software. To this goal she conducts feasibility tests, for instance with QGIS and PostGIS, as a power user. Ulrike represents the topic at FOSSGIS e.V. and also at the FOSSGIS Conference. She also networks with the global community at FOSS4G to advance this topic.

Another important concern of her is to improve and lower the barriers to participation for women in the FOSSGIS field. Against this background, she has already organised several Geochicas meetings in connection with the FOSSGIS Conference together with others.

Ulrike received the Nico Rüpke Award (in 2023) for the article “Seekarten mit QGIS – geht das? Machbarkeitsstudie zur Automatisierung der Produktion von A1-Seekarten”, published in KN – Journal of Cartography and Geographic Information 3/2023.
