GeoServer and MapFish enter OSGeo Incubation

The OSGeo Board is pleased to announce that it has approved the application by the MapFish and GeoServer projects to enter the incubation process. Incubation is a stepping stone to becoming a full fledged OSGeo project.

GeoServer is a server written in Java that allows users to share and edit geospatial data. Designed for interoperability, it publishes data from any major spatial data source using open standards. GeoServer is the reference implementation of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Feature Service (WFS) and Web Coverage Service (WCS) standards, as well as a high performance certified compliant Web Map Service (WMS). GeoServer makes extensive use of the GeoTools Java library.

MapFish is a flexible and complete framework for building rich web-mapping applications. It is based on the Pylons Python web framework, and emphasizes high productivity, and high-quality development. MapFish also provides a complete RIA-oriented JavaScript toolbox. The JavaScript toolbox is composed of the ExtJS, OpenLayers, GeoExt JavaScript toolkits, and specific components for interacting with MapFish web services. MapFish supports several OGC standards, including WMS, WFS, WMC, KML and GML via GeoExt and OpenLayers.
