For the first time, this workshop brings together experts from EARSeL and GISDECO networks. Especially for developing countries, integration of Remote Sensing and GIS offers unique access to primary data on the status of land surfaces, as well as possibilities for analysis, visualisation and development of possible solutions of problems, which due to dynamic changes both nature and humanity are exposed to. Global urbanisation, climate change and its effects on natural and human systems, land use and land cover changes, and salinisation are imminent dangers. The workshop provides a forum for presenting and discussing results, and to exchange expertise and experience among researchers and users engaged in solving the problems of developing countries.

The GISDECO Conferences have been held about every two years since its inception in 1991. The next event, which will take place in June 2008 in Istanbul Turkey, is organised in conjunction with the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL) and will therefore bring together Remote Sensing and GIS communities. Both events are being offered to the international GIS community – in particular:

members of organizations dealing with geo-information (GI);
scientists;
small- and medium entrepreneurs;
representatives of regional self-government authorities;
staff of institutions involved in implementation of the GMES Programme, including representatives of national GMES offices;
staff of National Mapping Authorities (NMAs);
other members of the Open-Source community

The main purpose of the International Symposium is to present results accomplished so far by the CASCADOSS Project partners, such as outcomes of an assessment of available FOSS4G tools and solutions, and to demonstrate the most promising and useful applications.

We will also strive to address the following questions:

In what way open-source software can foster use of GI technologies (particularly in reference to the GMES Programme) in the public sector?
How the existing GI standards contribute to the development of open-source applications? What are the current trends in this area?
How can FOSS4G services benefit from open-source solutions and stimulate the development of business-related GIS&RS applications?

Bonn January 14, 2008.

After two successful years the deegree day has become an essential part
of the deegree community. We would like to continue this tradition with
our third deegree day on June 17th 2008 in Bonn. As in the last years
this conference will be free of charge.

The deegree day will provide a platform for exchange and discussion on
the deegree project:
Developers will present both current and upcoming features while users
will show the latest project solutions. You will have the opportunity to
discuss pressing open issues in technology, communication, documentation
and project organization.

A preliminary agenda has been set up:

June 16th evening
For those who will arrive a day before we will organize an informal 'get
together' in a charming pub located in the "Old Town" of Bonn.

June 17th all day
deegree day conference
The deegree day conference is open to all interested institutions and
individuals free of charge. A detailed program will be announced in April.

June 18th half-day
Workshops on special deegree features (fee required). Topics, duration
and price will be announced soon.

Open Source Geo-ICT can't be stopped! The use of OS is ever increasing in the geospatial domain. Just think about MapServer, PostGIS, Flamingo, the GDAL/OGR libraries and all the applications based on that.
On Tuesday 17 June the Geo-Database Management Center of the GIS-technology Unit at the Research Institute OTB from the Technical University Delft organizes a seminar in collaboration with the Program Bureau 'Nederland Open in Verbinding' and Rijkswaterstaat. The seminar targets the use of Open Source Software in the geospatial domain. The seminar is a follow-up of the successful seminar held in October 2007 in Utrecht.

FOSS4G 2008 - Open Source Geospatial: An Option for Developing Nations

The annual Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) conference brings together the people who create, use, and support open spatial software. No other event brings together members of the open source development, open data creation, and open standards promotion communities like FOSS4G.

The 2008 FOSS4G Conference will be held in the fascinating and beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa from the Monday 29th September to Friday 3rd October at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

In a change from the norm, the FOSS4G 2008 will incorporate one of the biggest GIS events in South Africa - the GISSA 2008 Conference - Interest is expected from the International and Local Communities who might normally attend FOSS4G, as well as a new and enthusiastic audience. South African interest is expected to grow in the light of our new government Open Source Software policy. And of course we expect the usual GISSA community in South Africa to attend, including proprietary GIS vendors, users and presenters. Open communication, debate and discussion amongst the ‘proprietary’ and ‘FOSS’ communities will be encouraged.

The Conference Theme is Open Source GIS: an option for Developing Nations. FOSS4G 2008 is presented by OSGeo and the Geo-Information Society of South Africa (GISSA).
