In September 2010, the IV Regional Workshop on Geographical Information and Land Management will take place in Rio Gallegos city (Southern Patagonia, Argentina). This event, one of many annual activities of the SIT SantaCruz Project (Official Land Information System for Santa Cruz Province -Argentina- for supporting Land Decision Making processes) represent a regional forum where professionals and technicians in several fields related to GIS, remote sensing, cartography, geodesy, especially applied to decision making, planification and land management can interchange experiences.

This workshop is specially oriented to professionals and technicians working in public offices, but still open to researchers, students and general public interested in this disciplines.

As every year, several courses will take place as part of this workshop, one dedicated to GeoServer technology and its full implementation for web mapping services in public offices, and a second one dedicated to basics (theory and practice) of gvSIG GIS software, both free and open source resources.

For more details and information you can visit the workshop web at www.igot4.com.ar or the SIT SantaCruz Project at www.sitsantacruz.gob.ar

==Barcelona to host FOSS4G conference in 2010==

===Barcelona (Spain) selected to host the 2010 international conference for "Free & Open Source Software for GeoSpatial" (FOSS4G).===

The OSGeo Foundation has selected Barcelona for the location of the FOSS4G 2010 conference, to take place in September.

FOSS4G is the premier international event organized around Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial. The selection of Barcelona brings the conference back to Europe, providing an ideal central location for experienced users and core developers to meet and share experiences. It is also the single best annual conference to dive in to the Open Source geospatial world, with introductory workshops, case studies of successful implementations, and numerous opportunities for meeting others who have leveraged FOSS to solve their problems.

The Spanish language chapter of OSGeo is pleased to be selected to host FOSS4G 2010. Geospatial Free and Open Source Software has great institutional support in Spain. Government administrations like Extremadura, Andalucia and Comunidad Valencia are investing heavily in building software that meets their needs. The official language of the conference will be English, but the Spanish speaking community will have numerous opportunities to participate in their native language.

In addition to software, the conference will also touch on a variety of related topics such as open data, open standards and the INSPIRE directive. To receive additional information about the conference go to:

'''About OSGeo'''

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation has been created to support and build the highest-quality Open Source geospatial software. The foundation's goal is to encourage the use and collaborative development of community-led projects, data development and education [1].

'''About OSGeo-es'''

The Spanish language chapter is a fast growing community embracing all countries that speak the Spanish language. It is focused on promoting and building software, localizing documentation, and sharing educational material. The primary activity of the chapter is the realization of a Free GIS book, built by the community and distributed with a Creative Commons license.

'''About FOSS4G'''

FOSS4G is the annual international conference on Open Source geospatial software. From its beginning the FOSS4G conference has been the gathering of the spatial tribes and has a reputation of being a melting pot for great ideas in the spatial industry and a catalyst for many successful geospatial products, standards and protocols. The 2008 conference was held in Cape Town, South Africa and was a huge success[2]. The 2009 conference will be held in Sydney, Australia[3]. FOSS4G 2010 Barcelona will be the eighth "formal" gathering of the Open Source geospatial community. 2010 will be a key year for Europe, with the INSPIRE initiative, and FOSS4G will be the best place to see the Free Software way to make an SDI work.

The first data camp for geodata in Greece is organized as a two day event (Nov 19-20) in the premises of NTUA, Athens, Greece. The goal of the event is simple: develop apps/services based on open geodata, discuss issues regarding open geodata in Greece, train volunteers in open geodata, and educate on open source GIS projects.

The participation is open to anyone, and we are open to all possible contributions and ideas. There is no official schedule either! Since the event is held in parallel with a workshop regarding the Greek National Spatial Data Infrastructure, members of GeoDataCamp will have the opportunity to present their work and ideas to representatives from the public and private sector.

GeoDataCamp 2010 is organized by [http://geodata.gov.gr geodata.gov.gr], the Hellenic Mapping and Cadastral Organization ([http://www.okxe.gr www.okxe.gr]), and is supported by the Prime Minister's Office for eGov ([http://www.opengov.gr www.opengov.gr]), the Ministry for Environment, Energy and Climate Change ([http://www.ypeka.gr www.ypeka.gr]), and the Greek Free / Open Source Software Society ([http://www.ellak.gr www.ellak.gr]).

I am glad to announce the OSGeo Montreal Code Sprint 2011 that will take
place (in Montreal) on Tuesday-Friday March 15-18, 2011.

All the details are available or will be added to the wiki at
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Montreal_Code_Sprint_2011

This is the 3rd edition of this North American code sprint, it was held
in Toronto in 2009, NYC in 2010, and will be in Montreal in 2011.

The theme for this year is "The Rendez-vous of the Tribes" ... sending
out a clear message that we'd like to see members of all tribes (C,
Java, JavaScript, etc.) to join forces for the advancement of OSGeo
technologies. Last year's sprint in NYC helped foster synergies between
the tribes and we want this to continue even stronger.

The sprint is open to all OSGeo project contributors willing to get
their hands dirty working for the advancement of their OSGeo projects.
It is not limited to developers: power users can also contribute to
documentation (new docs or translations), in testing new features and
helping test/reproduce bugs in various environments.

If you plan to participate then please add your name to the wiki page to
help us with planning, and join the discussion list to get the latest
updates at http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/tosprint

Finally, like in previous years, we will be seeking sponsors (750$ each)
to help support food and fun for the sprinters as they work hard and
play hard for four productive days. If you are interested in being a
sponsor then please contact me off-list.

Thank you to our first two sponsors: LizardTech
(http://www.lizardtech.com/) and Azavea (http://www.azavea.com/), and to
the "Communauté Métropolitaine de Montréal" (CMM) for hosting us!

Best Regards

Daniel
